Buying a Car Out of State and Bringing It to Arizona

Buying a vehicle in another state and bringing it back to Tucson is common, and it's not complicated once you know the two or three things Arizona checks that an in-state purchase doesn't need. Here's the short version, what to bring, and where the process can slow down if you're not ready for it.

The out-of-state title, signed and notarised

Bring the title from the seller's state, signed over to you, and notarised if that state's title requires it. Not every state requires notarisation on a title, so check the document itself rather than assuming either way. Since the title is coming from outside Arizona, it's worth having the original in hand rather than mailed separately after the fact, and worth double checking the seller signed in the correct spot before you drive away with the vehicle. A title signed incorrectly in another state can be harder to fix once you're back in Arizona than it would have been to catch on the spot.

Emissions proof on vehicles five years old and up

If the vehicle is five years old or older, Arizona wants proof of emissions before the transfer goes through. Plan for this before you drive over, since it's a separate step from the title paperwork itself and it's the single most common reason an out-of-state transfer takes two visits instead of one. Newer vehicles, under five years old, don't need this step, so it's worth checking the model year before you assume you need it.

When a finance company still holds the title

Some out-of-state purchases are financed, and the lender keeps the title until the loan is paid off. That doesn't stop you from registering and driving the car in Arizona. In that situation, Arizona issues a Registration Only rather than a full title transfer. It registers the vehicle here in your name while the title itself stays with the lienholder in the other state.

This is genuinely common with car loans, so don't treat it as a complication, it's a normal path and one we process regularly. Once the loan is paid off and the lender releases the title, a full transfer can be completed at that point, and the vehicle moves from a Registration Only onto a proper Arizona title in your name.

Dealer purchases versus private-party purchases

If you bought from an out-of-state dealer rather than a private seller, the paperwork the dealer hands you at signing is usually what carries the title and lien information, so bring everything they gave you, not just what looks like the title itself. A private-party purchase puts more of the responsibility on you to make sure the title is filled out and signed correctly before you leave the seller's driveway, since there's no dealership double checking the paperwork on your behalf.
